I'm pretty sure that the iPhone accelerometer supports detection of clockwise/counter clockwise tilt, for a true space experience, one should be able to roll the ship as well as the other types of manuevers.

I don't remember if the original Star Raiders (atari 400/800) had a roll option, but I think it did, although the alien ships and starbase did not roll, just the stars themselves.

Good question!

No, Star Raiders just had yaw and pitch like we do.  I just looked at the game on the Atari800Win emulator and that's all the control you had there.

I had considered adding roll at one point but was a little concerned about over-complicating the controls.  As it is, the accelerometer is a little tricky because there isn't something like a self-centering joystick, where if you take your hands off it you fly straight.  That took some getting used to, and I ended up disconnecting the accelerometer steering while in the galactic map and LRS because if steering was activated when in those modes, you ended up going who knows where while you worked with those controls!

But this is a good idea for a future revision -- I always liked playing the F-15 Strike Eagle simulator on the Atari, and it used roll/pitch controls instead of yaw/pitch.  Might be a fun option.

Ok, you might be right, but I recall being able to switch the controlls so that left/right on the joystick allowed you to roll?

Nope - at least not on the original 400/800 version.
